Last night’s show…

…in Occidental was devoted to songs about the many joyful and twisted facets of love.  I try to have a common thread running through the songs on the playlist to give the night some sort of coherence and to reel me in while I’m choosing them.  

This week I noticed Valentine’s Day looming on the calendar for this Thursday, and thought what a wretched hallmark imposed obligation that day is–I should choose songs accordingly.  I collected songs that reflect the moody incarnations of love.  Not the saccharine-sweet, cloying kind of love that’s being sold in stores, but love for the rest of us. Still, even immersed in songs of heartbreak and betrayal, I couldn’t help but be drawn back by the hopeful ones, go figure.

So while well meaning “lovers” (oy) participate in the latest orgy of consumption, their gifts made less meaningful by their perfunctory nature, and amid clichés of hearts, candy and flowers, we know that without dark there can be no light–and so, in spite of seeing it from the other side, here’s to ugly, broken, all out love.

Playlist 1/21/2008

Yesterday I hosted my first radio show on community radio KOWS LP Occidental, 107.3 FM.  It will take some getting used to,  this sitting in a room alone, holding one-way conversations with invisible people I don’t know (actually, now that I think about it, I do that all the time.  Just without a mic.).  I think my song choices made up for the technical difficulty and personality disorder (I was brief when speaking, less is more from a struggling, learning, fumbling host).  Anyhow, important to grab one’s fears by the throat and choke until dead.  It isn’t how many times you fall down, but that you get up one more than that.   If x= the number of splats, x+1=# of times must get up…So nobody died, I only really stepped on the one Lucinda Williams song (funny I think that it was squished by my accidentally staring “Idiot Wind” on top of it-Bob speaks.  Must not take one’s self too seriously…) , recovered more or less from that train wreck, and the f-bombs we’re almost inaudible during “Brown-eyed Blues.”  All in all, a fine beginning.
